Ideal protection for powerful

 battery systems

There will soon be a new standard to address the much stricter requirements that fuses for energy storage and battery systems will be expected to satisfy. SIBA already has a number of products that meet this standard in its portfolio. In addition to its well-known back-up fuses that exclusively provide short-circuit protection, SIBA now also has a new family of full-range fuse inserts that respond to overload currents as well. Both product ranges have rated breaking capacities in excess of 100 kA and so can meet the tough requirements of modern-day battery systems.

SIBA fuse inserts: Already meet the new battery fuse standard

More energy storage systems are installed globally every day. Present-day battery systems often reach power outputs of several hundred MWh. That requires advanced protection using special fuse inserts. They have to dramatically reduce the current in response to a short circuit and interrupt it very quickly as well.

To address this need, national (DKE) and international (IEC) standard-setting committees have agreed on a new standard for fuse inserts to protect battery systems: VDE 0636-7 (IEC 60269-7). It sets out the requirements for fuse inserts and is currently in the draft stage of development.
Our experts serve on these committees. That has allowed SIBA to develop an entirely new range of back-up and full-range fuse inserts that conform to the upcoming standard and meet the demanding requirements of battery applications.

Voltages of up to DC 1500 V, rated breaking capacities > 100kA

Modern-day battery and energy storage systems place huge demands on fuses. Constantly rising power levels at maximum DC voltages of 1500 V can generate short-circuit currents of several hundred kiloamperes. Another issue relates to load profiles produced by a wide variety of loading and unloading cycles. Fuse inserts have to handle these cycles for long periods of time and still reliably break circuits if a fault occurs. Faults can involve high short-circuit currents or low overload currents.

SIBA has decades of experience with fuse solutions for power electronics and rail traction systems. It thus has the ability to effectively protect complex interactions between battery and mains circuits.

The new fuse inserts have been tested for a rated breaking capacity in excess of 100 kA and are available in various body types.
